SMILE Philosophy Bornhava's Sensory, Motor, Interactive, Learning, Environment (SMILE) philosophy was developed in response to the documented need to serve the children whose sensory dysfunction, social/emotional delays and communication disorders interfere with the learning process. Children may demonstrate more complicated behaviors and appear to have sensitive neurological systems that may be over or under reactive to various modes of stimulation. The students' limited speech and language skills often inhibit appropriate communication of wants and needs. This may lead to frustration and subsequent "acting out" behaviors. Bornhava's SMILE philosophy utilizes an eclectic approach representing a variety of documented educational methods such as: "More Than Words", "DIR-Floortime", "Total Language", "PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System)", and various sensory integration techniques.
